Russian philosopher Leo Tolstoy argued that the more a work of art makes you embody the specific experience that it attempts to convey, the better it is. He probably would have been a fan of this song. "The Vanishing of Isle de Jean Charles" contains samples of radio Public Service Announcements leading up to Hurricane Betsy in September of 1965 warning Louisiana residents about the approaching storm so they would be able to evacuate their homes. It was only after the samples were added that the song's transitions began to resemble the stages of a hurricane in a very Tolstoyan manner -- a large crescendo buildup, a destructive, surfy climax that seems to never end, and a slower "calm-after-the-storm" outro. The song was then named "The Vanishing of Isle de Jean Charles" after Isle de Jean Charles, a small sliver of land on the Gulf of Mexico side of the levee in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana. that gets completely flooded by every tropical storm that passes through. The island is eroding quickly, and the native Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw inhabitants there are being ordered to evacuate permanently before their land vanishes for good.
